Old "Cortijos" in Campocámara
For several years, I have wandered around the province of Granada, in the southern Andalucia of Spain. Here I found lots of old "cortijos" (rural farm houses) that have been abandoned years back. Whe I published some pictures of these "cortijos", somebody asked me the reason for so many abandoned farms. My friend (Mauricio Sedó García-Tuñón) gave the following answer: "There has been an important population shift in Spain the result of which is both an overpopulated coast and center, and a number of abandoned or near empty villages that show an eerie image. Fionàn O'Kelly has a flair for capturing the soul of those places in his photos."
